Replacing and moving the battery

I am looking at getting a new battery for the WJ and with the need for more power for the camping gear and lighting i want to upgrade to something more substancial.

AS the spare wheel wheel is too small for the spare wheel i am thinking of putting the new battery in here and use the freed up the space under the bonnet to properly fit all the fuses and relays in a water tight box.

make sure you are not losing the extra power in the big battery by extending the leads  :icon_winkle:

Big FO cables needed, I'm going 70mm2 for mid mounted batteries to the front of an XJ

How about running 2 batteries on a split charger, with the boot one just for the camping stuff?

split charge is bollocks, more terminals, more complications, either 1 big battery or 2 identical in parrallel, like the rest have said use as big a cable as you can afford, unless you are running a twin motore'd winch you probably wont need 70mm cable, 50 or even 35 will be your friend :greggmo:

Considering what he's said he wants to do with he additional battery, split charge is the ONLY way to go. At least it'll ensure he'll be starting the thing after a weekend in the boonies.If done properly,it'll work fine. He doesn't appear to be a winch monkey, so I can't see where the problem lies.

split charge with leisure battery for camping lights and stuff is the easy way to go


If ya doing winching during the day have 2 matched batteries linked........but be able to isolate one of them for your camping uses.......so you can still start in the morning :icon_twisted:


There are other ways but seem to remember horror stories of stuff frying other stuff and it all turning to cack and sick ECUs etc :jpshakehead:

I did, you mong. Don't get your skirt in a ruffle. Given the o/p's description of what he wants from his electrickery, I was just suggesting that one large or two parallel batteries isn't the answer, and split charging two would be the solution. IMHO of course.......

Just my 10p worth.... if you're going to put a battery inside the car, it needs to be a sealed type, preferably gel battery or fitted in a proper sealed and vented box.
