split charge is bollocks, more terminals, more complications, either 1 big battery or 2 identical in parrallel, like the rest have said use as big a cable as you can afford, unless you are running a twin motore'd winch you probably wont need 70mm cable, 50 or even 35 will be your friend

At least it'll ensure he'll be starting the thing after a weekend in the boonies.If done properly,it'll work fine. He doesn't appear to be a winch monkey, so I can't see where the problem lies.
