I've got a Midland 42Multi 80Channel CB Handheld - works great for what  I want and can use it in any vehicle with no hassle. I haven't bothered with an external aerial, as only tend to use at events, so everyone's pretty close.

Cobra are good and seem to be very popular at work( I'm a trucker), they're a bit on the large size though. For a smaller set Midland have a very good rep, try to get one without buttons for the channels on the mike, as they're a pain cause you'll change channel without realising it and the mikes are harder to get when they break. I don't recommend the new Intek CB, I got one because my cobra wouldn't fit in the slot of my new foden and it's rubbish.

i have a cobre uk29 model with night illumination and all the gadgets.... brilliant rig but as dingo says a bit on the large side.

i have an audioline cb to go into the jeep eventually... basic and mid sized.

i use to have a midland but found it to be a right pain with the speaker built into the mic.

you get what you pay for and i would take a cobra anyday  :D

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I'm thinking of getting a CB too.

I haven't been near one since the '70s, when they were illegal.  Can anyone confirm that you currently need a licence, and point me at a good website that gives info about CB etiquette?

A couple of other quick questions.  Do CB'ers still use call signs?  Do you still use CB slang and 10 codes?  Is there an emrgency channel, and are there any channels that should be avoided?

Apologies if this is beginning to sound like something out of 'Convoy'.  8)

theres no calls signs as such anymore round here

channel 9 is supposed to be emergency channel but then tell that to the kids

channel 14 is supposed to be the calling channel

i dont know anyone with a license so cant answer that one, but then i have never had one

theres a lot of kids on air these days but that doesnt stop us  :D

Ch 19 is truckers breaking channel, still use ten codes, slang and call signs. Avoid ch 40 and ch1 as there used to set up swr, so you'll get long silences on there whilst someones testing their rig.

Only ones I remember were

10 - 4 = ok
10 - 10 = goodbye
10 - 100 = buggered

Well, I was only born in the 70s :)

I've talked to the UK several times off my mobile (in direct violation of FCC rules and regulations :D ).  Well, one of mobiles anyway (not the TJ).  I don't know what's available in the UK, but if you have access to Uniden, they are good brand.  They make a couple compact sized radios that are relatively inexpensive that perform very well.  Here in the US they are the Pro510 and Pro520 models.  The average price is around $40-$60 USD.  But make no mistake about it, the antenna system is literally about 90% of performance.  You can buy the best radio made combined with a crappy antenna, and you won't get out worth shit.  But you can buy a cheap radio and good antenna set up and pretty much talk where you want (conditions dependent).

And using 10 codes is ghey.

depends on your set up

on a clear day i have got a uk trucker in holland

i also have a 150 watt power booster (burner) that helps but not strictly legal as there only supposed to push out 4 watts, it gives 150 watts on am and 90 watts on fm. i have a smaller burner going spare somewhere but cant remember the wattage off hand.

these can help pulling signals in as well as helping you get further out.
