2.5l TJ What are they like
« on: December 31, 2013, 09:18:25 PM »

As the title suggests, looking at info on a 2.5l TJ, what rear axle will it have? Whats the engine/gearbox like. Are they hard to covert to 4.0? Is it worth it?

Feel slow, engine needs reving to make it move, mpg same as 4litre. If you want a 4 litre, buy one in the first place imho

they have a 4.10 ratio in the axles so if you did put a 4l in it you could 32" tiers no problem

.......But it'd be much easier to put 4.1s in a 4.0 than fit a 4.0 in a 2.5.

They have a D44 rear axle with LSD, 3.73 ratios and will go anywhere a 4.0 will go.  They return mid 20's for MPG but don't sound as nice.  Let's be honest, both the 2.5 and the 4.0 engines are lazy, thirsty and slow and the Japanese get more horsepower and torque from a food blender...

The 4.0 will be more forgiving before you need to re gear, but that's something you should do anyway if you are going for bigger tyres.

Never driven one so no opinion on the 2.5, I am on my 4th 4 liter Jeep now and probably due to being lazy the engines can go on forever. The Indy Jeep mechanic I used for working on the 2.7crd has just sold his ZJ with 300k miles on the clock.
In my own opinion of the 4.0 they are very easy to work on for basic maintenance and for changing most parts. Fuel consumption  :icon_jook: is what it is you just have to live with it.

Rented one for a week in Spain a few years ago and it was actually OK probably because it was stock running 29in tyres! would not buy one though.  I'll have the 4.0l thanks.

Was looking at this one for a possible project

http://cars.donedeal.ie/vintagecars-for-sale/jeep-wrangler/6192516

I too would prefer the 4.0l as I had one in NZ and apart from the fuel consumption it never missed a beat.

What about value wise, is this expensive or cheap?

I seen that one as well, i think it would be a good buy, strip the immobiliser or drop a 4.0 in it

I'm a 4popper TJ owner of 11yrs and 80k hard miles, running 33s for last 4 yrs on stock gears.
It's great and a keeper.
But it's not at a 4ltr.
So if I had a choice go 4, unless there's a real good financial benefit.

€1000 for road tax, owch!

If you are going to the hassle of putting in a different engine drop in an LS1

It would be turning into a buggy, so won't be going on the road. Yep Tax here sucks. If I had to pay it on mine it would around €3000. Money wise what do you think, yeah a nice V8 would be nice.
