Hello all... I recently went off roading and thought it would be a good idea to try and get through what I thought was a puddle when in actual fact it was more like a lake. After I got the jeep pulled out it just wasn't firing up! Water has not made it's way into the engine so I presume this has caused an electrical problem. I am just wondering where to start too eliminate different things to find the cause of the problem. The jeep is a 1995 jeep cherokee xj 4.0l high output. The engine wasn't fully under water as you can see from the pictures below. Any help would be great thanks

First thing i would check is the distributor, pull the cap off and dry it out if its wet. After that i'd pull a plug and crank, plug it back into the ht lead, ground the threaded edge, get someone to crank it over and see if you have spark.

also check the engine oil to make sure you haven't filled the sump with water, be no harm to check the front diff as well

The dizzy cap was bone dry when I had it off I cleaned up the contacts, I have also checked for a spark on two different plugs and there was nothing that's as far as I have got!!

Check the coil pack and distribution power board relays

Dtooth how would I check them to make sure they are all in working order?

have the ecu's got soaked, chances are you have wet wiring which is causing a short on the ignition circuit if no spark is seen. might be a case of confirming all wiring especially connections are dry

Tis a puddle just a bigger than normal one, Did you get this sorted ?,
I am not surprised it stopped moving forward but i am surprised the engine stopped running.

Been doing some testing on the poor thing today, I tested the connector block at the back of the ignition pack there is 12v on one and 0v on the other so from there I moved on to earthing a spark plug straight from the ignition pack no spark what so ever!! I then tested my cps I don't have a 5v reading when my the crank shaft it rotated by hand and I don't have a permanent power supply but the earth is fine does this point to the main ecu?

And no georgen it's still collecting dust looking sorry for its self in the garage

If you have ignition then borrow or buy a scanner. This might point you in the right direction and come up with a starting point. I'm assuming you've checked the fuses too

All fuses inside and under the bonnet are all in good working order that was the first thing I looked at if only I was that lucky to have a blown fuse!! I don't have the Cable to plug my tester in and I can only get one form the states! I don't know where to go next I am not getting a spark but the correct voltage to my connector block at the back of the ignition coil and my cps isn't getting the voltage it needs the auto shutdown relay and fuse are all good so where does that leave me?? My friend seems to thin it is the ecu but don't want to jump in and buy one till I can be at least 80% sure it is that

have you checked the big connectors on the ECU they can get crap on them

Which gauges on the dash are working if any and what lights do you have with ignition on?

All gauges work when the ignition is turned on and all my lights turn on abs,check engine, hand break when the lights are turned on all work but my check engine light doesn't go off!!

I don't know anyone with a scanner and the one that I found on the internet with the key on and off doesn't seem to work

Speak to your local garage who's got a Snap On one who could pop out. You'll be scratching your head for weeks and spending money on bits that don't need replacing. It might cost you £60 but at least you'll know.

Have you tested the ckps as well as the cps because if thats knackered you wont get a spark but as was said above if you get it on a scanner you wont throw £££ at it. If you need a sensor get a factory part not a generic piece of crap for a few £££ less.

Yeah, you mentioned the cps (camshaft) but nothing about the ckps (crankshaft) check the voltage there it will prevent a spark occuring.

When people use the acronym CPS it can mean either cam or crank sensor it really depends who's asking. It's less confusing if using the terms CKP and CMP do indicate crank and cam sensors as Jeep do.

That aside the key on-off trick should work for a 95. The technique is, within five seconds and without starting the engine, turn the ignition on-off-on-off-on, leaving it on the third time. In a 95 the check engine light should flash to indicate codes. The codes are all 2 digit, and they will be displayed by flashing the first number with short pauses between the lights, a long pause then the second digit. There will be a longer pause between codes. 55 means end of codes.

So still stuck I have Tryed the key trick nothing Happened, I have Also changed spark plugs, ht leads, crank and cam sensors and still absolutely nothing help!!!!
