Starting ?
« on: August 25, 2006, 07:26:05 PM »

Heres a question for you all . . . . . .

Me 91 xj automatic has occasionally been temperamental . . . . . . .

(a) engins off an ive mooved the gear stick from park an back again (wont start)

(b) stopped engin whilst stil in gear"reverse or drive"  when goin to restart 10 mins or even 24hrs (wont start)

some times will start after about half an hour after first trying ( very strange indeed. . . . .

other times have to rock it in park . . . then pop into neutral move forward then hey presto . . . . . . .

on occasion all i need to do "if parked on a slight slope" is disengage the handbrake . . . . then fire away  . . . . . .

to be honest im just bemused . . . . . . .any advice welcome  .  . . . . . .

cheers Plum . . . . . . . .i know before you say it im a dipstick

When you say it wont start, do you mean it wont even turn over? It could be the neutral position switch either faulty or out of adjustment.

On the XJ that I had from Tank you sometimes had to wrestle with the shifter to get her to start.

Had a similar problem on my old Range Rover. It was the Park Inhibitor switch. I think thats the same thing as Mark is talking about in Landy Talk

neutral saftey switch, on the side of the gearbox
it will only start in park, hence if you have to wiggle the selector = dodgy nss

that is a 4.0 fuel injected engine by the way  8)

It sure doesn't look like a 258 carry over.

Yup, thought it would be, it's a 4.0 High Output.
The problem is likeley to be with the neutral saftey switch which is incorporated in the switch pack on the side of the transmission.

You should be able to start it in N as well as P, but not R, D, 3, or 1-2.

Almost certainly the NSS.
