Emissions test failure!!!!

Anybody ever heard of an MOT failure due to the emissions being too low to test?

This has just happened to my 98TJ

The tester reckons he can only just get a reading at 2,000rpm and told me I must have a blocked exhaust or a buggered CAT. After I told him, if the exhaust was blocked it would either stall the truck or make its own exit which it has not done he changed his story to, " Well your exhaust is running too hot anyway and thats got to be caused by the Cat being knackered and restricting flow"! He would not admit there was even the slightest possibiliity that his machine is cocked up or the twat using it didnt know what he was doing!! Also disregarded my comment that if the CAT has failed too much emissions would get through!!!

Now I told him to go fuck himself as my first reaction is they are pulling a fast one as I went over my truck with a fine tooth comb and the exhaust is only 2 years old and fully stainless including the CAT. I dont offroad this one and there are no leeks. The Borla still makes the same noise and if I put my hand at the back I can feel the exhaust pushing back my hand. Granted it is very hot but stuff is coming out. There is no differeance at idol and it performs the same.

Then to top it off they had the indignaty to tell me they broke my driver side door handle. They pulled on it when it was locked and have disconnected the lifting mech. Then tried to get me to pay for them to put it right!!!!!! telling me there must have been some existing problem!!!!!!!!!!! He got a few more fucks fired into him........then to top it off he tells me they broke the handle before doing the MOT so it failed on that also as they had to get in vis the passenger door..........................................................................................................................................................................................................................Words can not describe!!!!!!!! you can't fail an MOT emmission test for a too low reading, if he is a qualified mot tester he wont question it albeit point it out that it is too low. as for the cat bullsh1t all this will do is increase the emmission reading. Holes in the exhaust system after the cat can allow air into the stream and dilute the gasses resulting in a lo reading. what the tester should have done is check the silencer for leaks and then block the tailpipe up to the point where the engine will slow or it will adjust by the ecu and increase more fule to achieve the idle speed. either way you cant fail for a too low reading
 as for the door handle bill them good and proper but one thing with the inspectorate the y do stick by their mot stations but if they are in the wrong then they do come down hard where necessary.
 if they broke the door handle before test then yes they have to issue a failure on the door but i would expect them to fix the handle free of charge and then issue the jeep as a pass with just an apology.

Sorry but I do have to laugh, I wouldnt if it were me tho'

I would def be givin him a round of f**ks  :-? but anything to do with the govt dept these days wouldnt suprise me.

If there was a hole in the exhaust it would show up on the lambda reading but not known of one failing cos the Co was to low.As for the door handle they should put it right for you, at least give them a chance to put it right at there cost accidents can and do happen.

No the emissions test results sheet what are the readings
The limits are
CO less than 0.20
HC less than 200
and the third which i cant remember what it stands for should be between
0.97 to 1.03
these are on 2500-3000rpm

on idle the co should be less than0.30
If its in these limits it should pass

On the last MOT, my TJ came back with a CO reading of 0%

That was at fast idle (2500-3000rpm) and at normal idle.

Didnt think you could go much lower than that.

Was yours reading minus figures Clayt

The machine did not give a reading, it came up with an error message saying "low Flow"

Low flow could point at a blocked cat, or a faulty machine,

If i was you id go to another garage ansd have another test done and compare the out come.

I'd agree with Mike above, the error reading is from the machine not getting enough "flow" to give a reading. Machine or user error.

OK

I had my trucks emissions tested today by another test station and these are the results.



So I am glad about that. I also got my door handle fixed so I can open the door again now from the outside without doing so from the passager side.

That means its round 2 tomorrow when I present them with a bill for the door and the test results. No reason not to give me my MOT now either but will have to see how loud the shouting gets. After all this I am even more furious for all the running around.  :evil:

Will let you know how it goes, could get ugly.

Low flow is definately referring to the machines inability to draw enough gas to sample.
What a bunch of incompetents!
Tell them to change the filters in their machine in future and recalibrate!

That guy sounds like a right asshole, there's an MOT testing station in this neck of the woods with a twat like that working there.  I've had personal experience, different issues though.  Hope all goes well without the need to punch the fucker, but a day in court is sometimes considered worth it.

The final verdict.

I called Vosa first thing this morning, they took details but did not really seem bothered!!!!! Then went to the test station and presented them with the new emission results and the bill for my door repair. They coughed and tried to be awkward, but what aided my cause was the 3 customers waiting behind listening to the conversation. They then refused to pass my truck using sombody elses emission results so I told them to test it again. This time I went with them and low and behold everything tested fine this time!!! They checked the door and then gave me my MOT certificate. Back in the office with the 3 customers sitting waiting I explained nicely that the reason I did not want him to fix my door was because I had lost confidence in their ability, after more debate he refunded my money for the door fix, then gave me £20 for fuel for all the running around I had to do. BUT I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK THERE AGAIN!!!

The excuse presented for the previous emissions low flow reading while watching all tests pass was maybe he didnt warm the truck up enough before testing!?

What a lot of messing around, its all frustrating but now sorted.

it's a shame you haven't got the origional exhaust result sheet as you could send this off to the inspectorate to inform them of a testing station using faulty equipment

the warming of the engine is supposed to reduce the emissions count as the engine will always run a rich fuel/air mixture when cold plus it will allow the silencer to clear out the collected fuel/air mixture. they also shoul run at a fast idle prior to taking the test as well.


but you passed so there's no problem there

take it to a MOT centre,this is a place that only does MOTs,there not intrested in repairs or trying to rip you off for getting a repair job,.the Mot centre are i reckon a little less harsh on cars during emission testing,

you mots test,Mmmm!could the car have been parked on the pipe during the mot,this happened to my brother not long ago,seems you may not need a brain to mot a car these days,short training course and away you go...
but glad you got a result.,,just dont go back to them in the future,word of mouth is the best advert and they just blow it i reckon.

That's bolloc*s mate! I'm a tester at an independant garage, and never fail anything just to get work! In fact we pick up a lot of unnecessary repairs from the local 'MOT centre' whose failure rate is I'm sure higher than mine.
