Just passed on a working but not mint looking 8274 for not much money off a small recovery wagon.
Its been outside all its life it doesn't look that great; algae would clean off but has anyone refurbed one of these (eg repainted/plated)? Sad I know but my TJ is quite tidy so don't wish to let its appearance slip!
Also do they go on normal Warn style winch plates?
I've always wanted a Warn 'i' winch but as my TJ hasn't been stuck for a few years now have never been able to justify it; 8274 would be overkill!

Cheers IOM: thats ideal. Just need to man up & go back & get it at less than 1/2 the price of a new Chineese winch it would be a cheap way into Warn ownership!
-
No problem - when you are ready get one of these...

OK need to get the bugger back from Ireland - who had that shipping contact?
-
@IOM
you do realise that that winch is NOT a Gigglepin 8 series winch I presume, its not far off what I have, only he has a billet brake assembly, I reckon the cabling is a bit small too. Great winch, not sure about the price.
-
Yeah he is calling it a "GP spec" as for the cabling I will go welding cable anyhow - the new Gigglepins have the brake in the motors yhay are from David Bowyer - appreciate the heads up though I only paid £2,200gbp plus shipping so it's value at that.
-
Not sure about the bowmotor 2's having a brake inside them, the GP 84 has an external brake, similar to the 8274.
For Reference I have used 70mm2 cable to and from the winch, and then 50mm2 for the small lengths from the solenoids to the motors, I have also double'd it up so if one albright fails the other will still run both motors, which causes a bit of a pain for fault finding but heh! My cable is double insulated and came from my local Marine Electrician.
£2,200 huh, yes I spose that's not bad, a good indicator if I ever need to sell mine and I have +50% gears
When I have the money I will stick Bowmotor 2's on mine and hopefully one day I will find another 8274 lower casing so I can build up my rear
-
Use tri-rated cable as its oil resistant and the insulation is made of much tougher stuff than welding cable which is normally rubber based and easily sliced :icon_winkle:
and thats proper advice island of man and not ghay in any way (apart from the rubber based and slicing bit of course)

Have you a link? This is news to me so would like to learn more.

It's like the motor from the goldfish with the brake in the end I believe all very top secret!!
A new Gigglepin is now approaching £5K with the VAT and as such makes this one look value.

who had that shipping contact?
If you refer to the BD<->IrishCJ6 V8 transaction : http://www.irishgroupage.co.uk/ (http://www.irishgroupage.co.uk/)

tri rated cable
http://www.eland.co.uk/documents/Tri-rated%20Cables.pdf (http://www.eland.co.uk/documents/Tri-rated%20Cables.pdf)
check out its current carrying capacities(at full duty) and then realise how big your cables (and batteries) will need to be to run for any period of time :icon_winkle:
If you want some, i can get you it and stick some crimps on if you want, but it will only be available in black at that sort of size!

Hmmmmm need to read up some more.....
-
This is interesting, I would say that one problem with your tri rated cable is that the sheath can only withstand up to 105deg c, I would be inclined to go for some of this:
http://www.eland.co.uk/ss/electricalcable/rubberflexiblecable/cable33/0361tq-black-welding-cable-to-bs638.html (http://www.eland.co.uk/ss/electricalcable/rubberflexiblecable/cable33/0361tq-black-welding-cable-to-bs638.html)
or get what Jim supplies:

and don't forget to uprate your alternator cables, and your main earth to chassis
Anyhow, enjoy your winch, they are the nuts, oh and keep your hands well back when using it :icon_eek:

Top Tip TA!!!

This is interesting, I would say that one problem with your tri rated cable is that the sheath can only withstand up to 105deg c
With all due respect the welding cable is only rated to operate up to 85deg c if you read the blurb properly :003:
-
Mate, if you've done the deal you need to tell the guy to pull the auction 'cause as of now it's live... :icon_eek:
-
I suspect the power cables you are going to need will end up looking as thick as the hydraulic toobs on my Mog winches!
-
wow i would be satisfied just to find a cheap 8274 without going mad over cables and uprating it

Relax it's a done deal!!!

Is this monster for the front of the buggy?
Are you going to have to create more 'real estate' to mount it?
Looks good tho.
About a grand cheaper than a full bling Gigglepin...........nice one :icon_twisted:

Indeed front of the Buggy thinking of buying a Gwyn Lewis mount seen this on EBay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/gwyn-lewis-8274-winch-tray-/180653338578?pt=UK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Other_Vehicle_Parts_Accessories_ET&hash=item2a0fc72fd2)

Doh! :jpshakehead:
-
The Gwyn Lewis mount seems a bargain. Most of us couldn't buy the steel, do the welding and punt it out for a profit for that amount.
Well at least I couldn't...................but then I am very slow.
So Gigglepin upping their prices.............................. so will they get the business..............??????
Me..........................I am keeping it ghetto..................Bowmotor 5hp to replace theh vintage 2.5hp............see where we go from there :icon_twisted:

If your needing a hand with shipping from Ireland to the UK I'm more than willing to assist seeing as you lot on the other side did it for me, Irishgroupage were ok but I have found a better crowd Translandgroup.com, they were half the price and much more professional, everything was over the internet and picked up and dropped off in 2 days, I can even put it on a pallet if its not already on one, let me know if you need assistance.
